Lupus
Lupus, also known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks healthy tissues in various parts of the body, including joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain. The exact cause of lupus is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Women are more likely to develop lupus than men, and it often affects people of African American, Hispanic, and Asian descent more severely. Other risk factors for lupus include exposure to sunlight, infections, certain medications, and hormonal factors. Symptoms of lupus can vary widely and can include fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes, fever, and kidney problems, among others.
