Aplastic anemia is a rare and serious blood disorder in which the body stops producing enough new blood cells. The condition occurs when the bone marrow, which is responsible for producing blood cells, is damaged and fails to make enough red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Some potential causes of aplastic anemia include exposure to certain toxins, radiation or chemotherapy treatment for cancer, certain viral infections such as hepatitis, and autoimmune disorders. Risk factors include having a family history of the condition, being exposed to certain chemicals or toxins, and undergoing radiation or chemotherapy treatment.
