Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD)
Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) is a group of disorders characterized by delays in the development of communication and socialization skills. It is also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and includes several disorders such as Asperger's Syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. The exact causes of PDD are unknown, but it is believed that genetics and environmental factors may play a role. Risk factors for PDD include having a family member with ASD, certain genetic mutations, and being born to older parents. Symptoms of PDD vary depending on the specific disorder but may include social and communication difficulties, repetitive behaviors, and sensory sensitivities.
