Intestinal obstruction refers to an impediment that hinders the passage of food or liquids through either the small intestine or the large intestine (colon). Various factors can lead to intestinal obstruction, including the formation of fibrous tissue bands (adhesions) within the abdominal cavity following surgery, hernias, colon cancer, specific medications, or the development of strictures due to inflammation within the intestine caused by conditions like Crohn's disease or diverticulitis.
