Bile, a crucial fluid produced in the liver, plays a pivotal role in aiding digestion and facilitating the absorption of specific vitamins. It also serves to eliminate cholesterol, toxins, and worn-out red blood cells from your body. The continuous inflammation in the liver can result in the impairment of bile ducts, the formation of irreversible scars on liver tissue (cirrhosis), and ultimately, liver failure.

While this condition can affect individuals of any gender, primary biliary cholangitis predominantly targets women. It is categorized as an autoimmune disorder, indicating that the body's immune system erroneously attacks healthy cells and tissues. Researchers believe that a blend of genetic and environmental factors triggers the onset of this disease. Its progression typically unfolds at a gradual pace. Although there is currently no known cure for primary biliary cholangitis, medications can slow down the damage to the liver, especially when treatment is initiated in the early stages.
