Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a sudden and often reversible decline in kidney function, characterized by a rapid rise in serum creatinine or decrease in urine output. AKI can be caused by various factors such as decreased blood flow to the kidneys, kidney damage due to toxins, infection, or certain medications. Risk factors for AKI include advanced age, pre-existing kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, liver disease, and the use of certain medications such as NSAIDs and ACE inhibitors. Early diagnosis and management of AKI are crucial to prevent further damage and complications.
