What is Mesothelioma?
According to Asbestos.com, “Mesothelioma is characterized by malignant tumors that develop in the mesothelium, a layer of protective tissue that covers several organs.
The four types of mesothelioma are identified by the location where tumors develop: Pleural mesothelioma (lungs), peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen), pericardial mesothelioma (heart) and mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis (testes).
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer. Treatments are available to extend life expectancy and improve quality of life, but there is no cure.”
Sadly, the average life expectancy for someone diagnosed with mesothelioma is far too short. According to Penn Medicine, “The mesothelioma survival rates is typically 4–18 months after diagnosis, but there have been patients diagnosed with mesothelioma who have lived longer than 10 years. The current five-year survival rate for the disease is just 10 percent. It's important to note that this number is higher than it was 10 years ago and much higher than it was 20–30 years ago. As mesothelioma is better understood diagnosis and treatment improves.”
A trust fund was established for victims of mesothelioma, including those diagnosed with lung cancer and other asbestos-related conditions such as asbestosis, pleural calcification, pleural plaques, pleural thickening, and pulmonary fibrosis. More than $30 billion was provided to compensate victims of asbestos exposure. The fund provides compensation for these victims, however, you may decide to have your case adjudicated. Because there is no cure for mesothelioma, the impact of a mesothelioma diagnosis can be devastating to the victim and the family. You may want our attorneys to try your case in court. These cases are relatively rare, but they do occur, and often the victims and their families not only receive compensation for their pain and suffering, but juries also may provide punitive damages in order to ensure protections for workers are put in place. Below are two reports where these victims got their day in court and the result of these trials:
Bridgeport jury hands down $20M verdict in asbestos case
Cook County jury awards $40M for asbestos death
A mesothelioma diagnosis cannot occur without a biopsy and a pathology or cytology report confirming the diagnosis. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, don’t delay…fill out the free claim analysis now.
What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a mineral most commonly used due to its effective insulation abilities. Asbestos is resistant to electricity, heat and corrosion. According to asbestos.com, “Asbestos was widely used in construction as an effective insulator, and it can be added to cloth, paper, cement, plastic and other materials to make them stronger. But when asbestos dust is inhaled or ingested, the fibers can become permanently trapped in the body. Over decades, trapped asbestos fibers can cause inflammation, scarring and eventually genetic damage.
Exposure to asbestos can cause cancer and other health conditions. A rare and aggressive cancer called mesothelioma is almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos also causes a progressive lung disease called asbestosis. The carcinogenic qualities of the mineral are what makes asbestos dangerous.”
What Industries / Trades May Have Exposed Workers to Asbestos?
There are many workers who may have been exposed to asbestos fibers during the course of performing their normal work-related duties. This is a comprehensive list, but certainly not a complete list, of trades and occupations whereby workers may have been exposed to asbestos: Asbestos cement pipe worker or manufacturer, Automotive, Boilermaker, Brake mechanic, Chemical refinery/plant, Commercial contractor, Construction, Drywall, Demolition, Electrician, Factory, Gasket work, HVAC work, Iron worker, Industrial manufacturing, Millwright, Maintenance worker, Navy Veteran, Paper Mill, Pipefitter, Plumber, Paper Industry, Power Plant, Refractory Plant worker, Refinery, Steel Mill, Shipyard, and Ship Builder.
Loved ones may have been exposed to asbestos via transfer of the fibers. Often, workers would bring home the fibers on their clothing, and a loved one may have been exposed to these fibers through close contact with the worker…even by way of doing their laundry…for many years. There have also been cases involving exposure due to extensive use of talc-based products. If you had long-term exposure to asbestos and worked in another trade or occupation or were exposed to these fibers via transfer, you may still qualify for compensation for your pain and suffering.
