Scleroderma (Systemic Sclerosis)
Scleroderma, also known as systemic sclerosis, is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the connective tissue and the skin. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks its own tissues, leading to the overproduction of collagen and fibrosis. This can cause thickening and hardening of the skin and internal organs, such as the lungs, heart, and kidneys. The exact cause of scleroderma is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Risk factors for scleroderma include being female, middle-aged, and having a family history of the disease.
